Spring has finally taken hold in Winnipeg after a couple of false starts (fingers crossed), so now you can really get into spring cleaning. And although you may have already gotten down to it, have you cleaned these often forgotten areas?


Appliances collect dust, grime, grease and crumbs like no other place. Did you get behind the fridge vacuum the coils (it will also help with performance)? If your fridge gasket (rubber lining on the door) is anything like mine, it loves to collect crumbs and could use a wipe with warm soapy water. Most stove element dials pop right off, and could use a good soak.


Things like your DVD player, gaming systems, routers, and modems love dust. Or rather, dust loves them. Use an electronics duster (also called an air duster) to blast the air out of the vents. Keeping electronics dust free can help them from overheating and prolong their life.


We change sheets and pillow cases on a regular basis, but how often do you wash the actual pillows? It’s recommended that you wash them twice per year, and follow any cleaning instructions on the tag. Note that foam pillows shouldn’t got in the washing machine, but down and fiberfill pillows can (so long as they fit).

A Bright Idea - Edison Properties Makes the Switch to LED Bulbs










Edison Properties maintenance staff have been visiting all suites in each of our 25 residential apartment buildings and townhouses to replace compact fluorescent and incandescent light bulbs with high efficiency LED bulbs.

Edison Properties has decided to take a step towards energy efficiency by adopting LED bulbs and fixtures under the Manitoba Hydro Power Smart program.

LED vs. Incandescent

The primary benefit of LED bulbs is energy efficiency. The typical in-home incandescent bulb uses 60 watts of electrical power to achieve a light output of 800 lumens, while an LED bulb will only use 9 watts.

They are also more cost effective. The energy savings correspond to a $4 per year saving in hydro costs. And while that may seem like a small amount, that’s the per bulb figure. Consider that Edison Properties manages nearly 5000 suites across the city.

An LED bulb also lasts significantly longer -- up to 25,000 hours compared to an incandescent bulb’s 1,200 hours. That means a single LED bulb will provide the same light as 21 incandescent bulbs. When you look at the cost of savings over that lifespan, it’s estimated that an LED bulb will cost $200 less than using incandescent bulbs.

LED vs. Fluorescent

The comparison shakes out a little differently when you look at compact florescent light (CFL) bulbs. CFLs are also high efficiency, the typical household bulb is 14 watts. They have an average lifespan of about 8,000 hours, which is still pretty good, but still significantly shorter than an LED bulb.

In terms of quality of light, LEDs often come out on top of that comparison as well. CFL bulbs will take a little bit of time to “warm up” before reaching their full brightness. LEDs give their full light as soon as their switched on.
Another drawback is that CFL bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, which can be harmful to health and the environment. Breaking a CFL bulb is bad news, and great care must be taken in cleaning them. CFL bulbs should also be disposed of correctly to keep the mercury out landfills and the environment.

Not Just In-Suite

In addition to the in-suite bulbs, Edison Properties is in the process of replacing light fixtures in common areas. LED fixtures have begun appearing in hallways, lobbies and parkades, resulting in brighter lighting and greater energy efficiency.
