Our hearts go out to those affected by the London highrise fire. This tragic event reminds us of the importance of fire safety, which is something that we take very seriously.
When you chose to rent an apartment, especially in a highrise building, you place your trust in our ability to keep you safe. And that is something that we don’t take lightly.
Fire alarms in Edison Properties buildings are monitored 24/7, so when the building alarm sounds, the fire department is alerted immediately. The alarm system is tested monthly. Smoke detectors located in resident suites are tested by staff and inspectors annually.
One thing that is being reported in the media coverage of this tragic event in London is that building management had told residents to stay in their suites in the event of a fire. This is not recommended. In the event of a fire, all residents should evacuate the building by using the nearest fire exit.
Each building has multiple fire exits, and residents are reminded to familiarize themselves with the evacuation routes that are posted on each floor. In addition, residents should learn where pull stations, fire phones, and extinguishers are located.
A number of Edison Properties buildings are 55+ properties, and as such some residents might not be able to use stairs. If this is the case, please alert your resident manager. Each building manager keeps a list or residents that can’t take the stairs, and that list is made available to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. So if you are unable to use stairs, or if you are unable to safely make it to a fire exit, stay in your suite and call 9-1-1.
Fire inspections happen on a regular basis, and residents can be comforted by the fact that fire safety standards are very high and strictly enforced in Winnipeg. All of our buildings are up to date and in compliance with all fire codes and city bylaws relating to building safety.
