Our History
In 1962 Mr. Martin Bergen formed Marlborough Development Corporation Ltd, which developed several apartment blocks in Winnipeg. Its first large venture was the 100 suite General Grant building in 1964.
Marlborough Development Corporation Ltd. was a pioneer and an innovator in construction technology. It was the first to construct an all-electric building. Its L&B Towers project was the first residential project in Canada to utilize pre-cast hollow core floor construction. Its Oakland Gardens project in 1978 was constructed entirely of pre-cast units craned into position.
By 1970 Marlborough Development Corporation Ltd. was the largest developer of multi-family housing in Manitoba, and Edison Rental Agency was created to manage the increasing number of rental properties. The operating name of Edison Rental Agency was changed to Edison Properties effective October 1, 2012.
Our Buildings
The biggest project undertaken by Edison Properties was Fort Garry Place, a three-tower development in the heart of Winnipeg, including offices, apartments and a revolving restaurant. Fort Garry Place was also personally Mr. Bergen’s last development.
The most recent projects include 185 Smith Street, completed in 2016, and Bergen Garden, a senior living facility located in North Kildonan, completed in 2022. Bergen Gardens represents another leap forward as the first modern multi-story mass timber building in Manitoba.
People, not buildings, are at the heart of Edison Properties.
This is made evident by Edison’s strong belief in giving back to the country and community, which have provided much opportunity for our founder. Our values were built on a foundation of integrity, trust and relationships which remain at the core of Edison Properties today.
Our Purpose and Values Statement reflects the core principals instilled by Mr. Bergen in our company and in the many valued employees who carry on his legacy and share it with our next generation of employees to this day.
